How long does a dental implant procedure take?

What is a dental implant?

People go to the dentists due to a variety of reasons, the most obvious reasons of course would be tooth decay, gum disease, or loss of teeth. When teeth are lost due to decay or damage, dentists recommend dental implants to their patients.

Dental implants can be defined as dental treatments that use titanium prosthesis that are fixed to the jawbone in place of the lost teeth. The procedure is also known as “screw tooth” among people, referring to the implant’s structure and installation, in which the implant is fixed to the patient’s jawbone using screw support .

Having dental implants is preferable when a single, multiple, or all teeth are severely decaying and/or lost. The recommended lower age of the procedure is 18, and customers who got a completely developed jawbone. Moreover, the specialist will make sure whether the jawbone tissue is healthy enough for a dental operation or not.

All of these dental services are available at affordable prices in our clinic in Turkey, feel free to know more about the implants below from this article, or by contacting us whenever you like. Happy reading !

What are the types of implants?

The most well-known type of implants preferred and applied is the “screw implant”. However, there are many types of dental  implants out there. The implant of choice will be decided by dentists according to the place (in the jawbone) where the implant will be applied, and according to the jaw’s structure and tissue. Some types of dental implants can be listed as follows:

• Endosseous dental implant: It is a preferred type of implant in cases where one or more teeth are lost. It consists of three different types:

– Screw dental implant

– Cylindrical dental implant

– Blade dental implant

• Subperiosteal dental implant: It is an implant framework that is applied directly over the dental bone. This type of implant is not that common nor preferrable.

• Transosseous dental implant: This type of implant is applied to the entirety of the jawbone. This type of implant is not that preferable because its application is very challenging and difficult for both the patient and the dentist.

• Intramucosal dental implant: They are titanium coated implants.

• Endodontic dental implant: this is a method suitable for making weakened teeth stronger and harder. A strong dental framework is put in place using these implants.

How is the Implant Applied?

As in every dental treatment, there is a special process in applying the implants. While applying it, the following steps are to be followed:

1- Inspection; It is the first stage that includes the diagnosis of underlying dental conditions of the client such as, the general oral condition and whether the jawbone is suitable for dental implant treatment or not. In this step, the patient and the dentist also decide on the color of the denture and tooth.

2- Operation; Local anesthesia is applied, and the implant is screwed in the jaw. The operation duration may vary depending on the number of missing teeth. The overall process usually ranges from 30 to 90 minutes.

3- Healing Process; After the dental implant is embedded in the jawbone, the implant will fuse with the bone. This fusing process may differ in duration, ranging from  3 to 6 months, depending on the structure of the jawbone and the cohesion of the dental implant and the jawbone.

4- Placement of the Upper Structure on the Implanted Tooth (abutment); Once the implant is stable enough and healed to a significant extent, an upper cap will be placed on the screw of the implant.
5- Placing the Dental Implant Prosthesis (permanent crown); The final step is the placement of the crown, and that prosthesis is prepared according to the superstructure of the implant and the abutment, and their compatibility with the other teeth as well.

In Which Situations Is Dental Implant Treatment Performed?

There are cases where dental implant treatment is not applicable. Conditions needed to be eligible for a dental implant treatment can be listed as follows:

1- If the patient has not received radiotherapy treatment from the head and neck region in the past,

2- If the patient’s jawbone has not stopped growing day by day, that is, if the jawbone has not completed its development,

3- If the patient does not have heart diseases,

4- If the patient does not have gum problems,

5- If there is no severe smoking effects that affects the rapid healing of wounds in the mouth,

6- If the patient does not have chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure,

7- If the patient does not have diseases such as autoimmune (immune system diseases) and hemophilia (blood not clotting as it should),

8- If the patient does not have bone diseases

Implant treatment can be applied to patients with the above criteria. In addition to all these conditions, the patient should regularly maintain oral care after treatment, to prolong the effects of the freshly installed implant. However, If daily oral care is not taken into account, the recovery period from the procedure may be significantly prolonged.
